Jenny's Pay It Forward

Part 1:

What is "Pay It Forward"?

Pay It Forward is doing something nice for someone in need. Meaning that if you help three people by doing some random act of kindness and they do it too, it means that the one thing you did for someone has created a ripple effect. Pay It Forward is what helps the people in need become a better person and do something nice for another person which goes on and on and on... It may not seem like it's helping but in the end, the littlest things can make a big difference in the community or even in the world.

Part 2:

What was your Pay it Forward act of kindness?

Well, I decided to team up with Nicole Valencia and Erika Rego and do a group project together. We chose to collect used/new toys and books and wrapped them to donate to the Heart of Worship International Church, so that the kids there could have toys/books they can enjoy. The toys and books we've donated also went to the victims of the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines. We also decided to bake sugar cookies and decorate them very festive to celebrate the holidays and the upcoming new year. We gave them to people who we walked past by at The Forks and asked each and every one of them to pay it forward by doing something nice for someone else!

Why did you choose this activity?

We chose to do these activities because since it's the holidays, people around us locally or just in our community, they shouldn't care about how many presents they get, not getting what they wanted, wanting more... etc because they should think about how thankful they are to even have such wonderful people around them that care and love them. We chose to donate toys and books to the Heart of Worship International Church because it was just Christmas not too long ago, we could brighten children at the church and the victims in the Philippines day by giving and doing something nice for the kids who were affected by the Typhoon and don't have anything to play with or read, and also for the children in the Church alone too because sometimes, just giving even the littlest thing can make a change. We chose to bake sugar cookies and give them out to people at The Forks because what's more nice than giving out cookies while asking them to 'Pay It Forward' to someone else? I mean, it would sure make my day a lot better getting something that someone has spent time on and them asking just for a small favor to do something nice for someone else.

Who did you help?

We helped children at the Church and also the victims in the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines by donating our used toys/books; and going out just to buy toys/books for them. We also helped people who passed by at The Forks, by brightening their day by giving them cookies that took time to make and asking them to make a change by helping other people and just make them better individuals just by doing so.

What did you do?

We did sort of like a toy drive but with only the three of us and instead, we went to the Heart of Worship International Church to give the children toys and books to have and enjoy. We also baked and gave away what we spent time on which I think made an huge impression to those who we gave cookies to!

When did you do your act of kindness?

We did our act of kindness on separate days. First we baked the cookies on December 28th, 2013(around 6PM) then packaged them on December 29th, 2013(around 7PM) then gave the cookies out at The Forks, and donated the toys and books to the Church on December 30th, 2013(around 4PM).

Video of us 'Paying It Forward':

Part 3:

How did your act of kindness go?

I think our act of kindness went very well although we did have some difficulty baking the cookies since we didn't have all the right materials and didn't have much of a schedule planned out. In the end, now that I think about it; we all work very well together and our result of this project is very well done in my opinion.

What happened?

What happened was that we split up the whole Pay It Forward project by baking the cookies on the first day and on the second, we went to Walmart and bought materials we could use to package the cookies in. After we bought the materials, we spent our time packaging and tying on ribbon with tags to explain what the cookies are for also. The next day, we all gathered all the cookies, and donations then got ready to give out the cookies to people we passed by. Nicole's parents dropped off the toys and books we all collected and bought to the Heart of Worship International Church while we were at The Forks but as proof, we got a letter from the Church saying that we've donated and that they're for Pay It Forward.  Meaning that since we took a while to collect/gather, donate bake, package and deliver, we took about three days in total for us to do our act of kindness.

How did you feel?

Honestly, I felt so happy knowing that all those people we've gave cookies to, to show that even the littlest things can make a change really made them think about what they can do for the other people. Seeing all those people smile and tell us that what we're doing is such a great thing really made me feel good and they looked so appreciated about us using our own time to bake and organize everything made them smile a ton! Which in a result, made me smile as well seeing them like that. I really feel like donating the toys and books to the victims of the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines and children of the church really makes me feel good about what we did together! It's a really great feeling knowing that you've made a difference in someones life.

How did the person or people react?

The people who we gave cookies to and asked them to 'Pay It Forward' by doing anything nice for someone else, were in such awe then asked us what school we were from and said that our school is so great for doing such a project like this! Which really feels great knowing that we're apart of a great school that even strangers appreciate our hard work! The sadly didn't get to see the children of the Church or the victims of the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines's reactions but I'm sure they're very thankful and happy!

Did you ask the person or people to "Pay It Forward"?

Yes, my friends and I did ask people to "Pay It Forward" by doing a good indeed for someone else.

How did they react to your request?

The people we gave cookies to, mostly gladly accepted the request to do something nice and sure there were bumps in the road where a couple of people didn't accept the request but overall, everyone was all happy and glad to accept the 'challenge' we gave them.

Part 4:

Why is the idea of "Pay It Forward" important?

The idea of Pay It Forward is important because it shows that just by helping one individual, and they help someone else, it creates a chain reaction that can have such a great affect in the world to the world locally and globally

Has your act of kindness made a difference?

I think that our act of kindness made a difference because showing people around your community that just by doing good deeds just for anyone in general can create such a chain reaction in the world even if it was just giving out cookies with a tag saying 'Pay It Forward! Do one good deed for three people and watch the chain reaction grow!' while asking those we gave out to do something nice for someone else for example, just opening the door for someone or just donating toys and books to those who don't have any made a difference in their life because they'd know that someone has took the time to go out and buy toys or just gather their old toys for them so they have a chance to play/read and have a good time in general.

Kamille's Pay It Forward

Kamille's Pay It Forward

Video of us "Paying It Forward" in Bethelstadur:

Part 1
What is "Pay It Forward"?
Pay it Forward is showing a random act of kindness to a person. Then that person that you showed an act of kindness to shows an act kindness to another person. It's basically spreading kindness around. The act of kindness doesn't have to be big, just something that can make others smile.

Part 2
What was your "Pay it Forward" act of kindness?
First of all, Angel, Trisha, Heather and I teamed up to pay it forward. Our act of kindness was making the seniors who lived at Bethelstadur happy on Christmas Eve. Because most of the are living on their own and away from their family.

Why did you choose this activity?
For me, I agreed with my group mates about doing this activity because It reminded me of my grandparents who lives miles and miles away from my family and I but with this little act of kindness I can express my love to the seniors which I cannot give to my grandparents.

Who did you help?
We helped the seniors/tenements who lived in Bethestadur.

What did you do?
My group and I made the their favourite food, which was eggrolls and we baked cupcakes and sang Christmas carols. While we served them food, we also gave them Christmas cards!

When did you do your act of kindness?
We did our act of kindness on December 24th, Christmas Eve. Around 10 am to 3pm.

Part 3
How did your act of kindness go?
Our act of kindness was done very well. At first we started talking about our ideas and when we're gonna buy the things but then I asked when are we gonna do it, so my group mates and I agreed to start that day when we were "just" planning things outs. Then we went on from that day. I didn't know that we could really make it happen because if you think about it do you really think people would want stuff from strangers? Well I'm happy that I was wrong because it felt great seeing their joyful smiles and getting warm hugs.

What happened?
On the first day (December 22) we planned things but we also decided to buy the things we needed that day. So we went out and buy the ingredients we needed for the cupcakes and Christmas cards to give out. After buying all the things we needed, we went back to Trisha's house and did the cards. The next day (December 23) we went to superstore and bought the things we needed for the eggrolls, we decided to buy it then so it would be fresh. After that we went to Bethelsatdur just to see what it looks like and tell the people there that we're coming by the next day. On the last day (December 24) we went to Bethelstadur around 10 am to get things ready and cook the eggrolls. Around 12:30 pm -1:00 pm that's when the tenetents started coming down to the sun room when we had the food. While they ate my group mates and I thought it would be great if we had a little performance, so we decided to sing, we also had a speech after singing and it talked about pay it forward. Many more people came and we served them and gave them a Christmas card. At 3:00pm that's when we called it a day and cleaned up. It was great seeing them there and enjoy each others company! :)

How did you feel?
I felt so privileged that I got to do something like that because most kids don't. It was great seeing their faces with big smiles and hearing their laughter. I enjoyed doing that and hopefully I get to do something like that again. Hopefully we made their Christmas.

How did the person or people react?
They were surprised that kids were doing something like that and not adults.

Did you ask the person or people to "pay it forward"?
Yes, my group and I had a little speech which asked them to pay it forward.

How did they react to your request?
They didn't really react to our request but I heard someone saying "ohh" after we gave them a few ideas on how they can pay it forward.

Part 4
Why is the idea of "Pay it Forward" important?
The idea of "Pay it Forward" is important because it teaches us that you don't have to do something big just to show kindness.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?
Yes, our act of kindness made a differences in those peoples lives because even though we aren't their real family we at least showed them what a family is like.

Trisha's Pay it Forward

Part 1

What is "Pay it Forward"?
"Pay it Forward" is doing an act of kindness towards an individual person or a group of people. The act of kindness that you choose to do, can either be big or simple. If the person/people would like to repay you for your act of kindness, you just simply tell them to "Pay it Forward" and hope that they will also do something nice to another person or a group of people.

Part 2

What was your Pay it Forward act of kindness?
Angel, Kamille, Heather, and I, decided that we wanted to pay it forward together.
Our Pay it Forward act of kindness was visiting a senior home and sharing happiness with them.

Why did you choose this activity?
I chose to do this activity because it is that time of year where we share happiness with one another and spend time with our families, so we paid it forward by doing something simple to make their Christmas Eve a little more joyful!

Who did you help?
We helped out the seniors that lives in a senior home called Betelstadur.

What did you do?
At Betelstadur, my friends and I served the seniors free coffee and food. The food we served was egg rolls, cupcakes, mini muffins, cookies, mandarins, chips, and quiche. Then we sang and played Christmas songs for them. My friends and I also gave the seniors Christmas cards.

When did you do your act of kindness?
My friends and I did our act of kindness on Christmas Eve ( December 24, 2013) at Betelstadur, around 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Video of us "Paying it Forward"

Part 3

How did your act of kindness go?
Our act of kindness went well, and it was really successful because I think we've used our time wisely even though we've planned it on the same day we bought the supplies and ingredients.

What happened?
It took us three days to do our act of kindness. On the first day, my friends and I, along with my parents, and Heather's sister (Bethel) came with us to get the supplies and ingredients we needed for our act of kindness. We went to about 3 different stores. We bought ingredients for the food we made, Christmas cards for the senior, and Christmas hats for us to wear. On that same day we went back to my house and filled out the Christmas cards. On the second day around 10:00 a.m., we went to my grandparent's house and my mom and grandma taught us how to properly make egg rolls. Then on that same day, in the afternoon we went to Kamille's house to bake the cupcakes and practiced our speech and performance. Lastly, on the third day we did our actual act of kindness. We went to Betelstadur with my parents around 10:30 a.m. to cook the egg rolls and prepare the place for the seniors. When the seniors started coming, we served them coffee and food, gave them Christmas cards, chatted with them and we performed for them. Our act of kindness lasted till 3:00 p.m. After the seniors went back to their units, we helped cleaned up the place before we went home.

How did you feel?
I felt really happy doing our act of kindness, even though we were the ones giving. It was really heart warming seeing smiles on their faces.

How did the person or people react?
The seniors were amazed of our act of kindness that kids our age can do something really nice for them. You can also tell that they were really thankful by hugging us.

Did you ask the person or people to "Pay it Forward"?
We did ask the the seniors to pay it forward.

How did they react to your request?
The seniors didn't really react to to our request, but you could tell that they were thinking about it.

Part 4

Whys is the idea of "Pay it Forward" important?
The idea of "Pay it Forward" is important because it motivates us to do something nice and simple for others to be happy and to be loved. It shows us that something so small can be a big difference to all. A small act of kindness creates a ripple effect that keeps getting bigger and bigger that becomes a big act of kindness.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?
I think our act of kindness made a difference. Even if our act of kindness was small and simple, I think that it made the seniors' Christmas Eve more fun and joyful because they got to have like a mini Christmas party with their neighbours and just chat with one another and eat some food.

Nassia's Percents Post

Hi, this is my percents post! -Nassia

1) Key Percents:

- To find 50% of a number, divide it by 2.
- To find 10% of a number, divide it by 10.
- To find 1% of a number, divide it by 100.
- To find 25% of a number, divide it by 4.

A percent is... a number out of 100. When you break the word percent up, you get "per" and "cent, which means "per one hundred" basically.

 2) Represnting Percents

a) 180%

b) 12 3/4%

c) 0.7   .....???

3) Converting Decimals, Fractions, and Percents

26% -------->    26÷100= 0.26 (Decimal)
                           26/100 (Fraction)

EXPLANATION: To convert 26% into a decimal, you divide it by 100, and you get 0.26, your decimal number. To convert that into a fraction you first take 0.26, and since there are NO decimals in a fraction, you just exclude it. The same goes for the zero at the front because it has no value. Now you have 26. That will become the numerator of your decimal. To find the denominator, you look at the decimal number you found, and find the place value. The place value of 0.26 is 100. When you peice your fraction together, you get 26/100!! TA-DA!

7/10 -------->  7÷10= 0.7 (Decimal)
                         0.7X100= 70% (Percentage)

EXPLANATION: To convert 7/10 into a decimal, you divide the numerator (7) by the denominator (10). From that you get the decimal number, which is 0.7. To get the percentage, you multply the decimal you just got by 100, and you get the answer 70%.

0.024 -------> 0.024X100= 2.4% (Percentage)
                        24/10 (Fraction)

EXPLANATION: To convert 0.024 into a percentage, you have to take it and multiply it by 100. After you get your answer from that, use it to get the fraction. There are no decimals in fractions, so 2.4 turns into 24, and the place value of the decimal is 10. You get 24/10.

4) Percent of a Number ( Calulator and No Caculator)

20% of 60 ------> CALCULATOR: 0.20 X 60 = 12
                              NONE: 10% of 60 = 6           6 X 2=12

0.1% of 40 ------> CALCULATOR: 0.1x40=4
                               NONE: 0.1% is 4

250% of 400 ------> CALCULATOR: 250÷100= 2.5      2.5x400= 1,000
                                  NONE: 100% of 400 = 400
                                               100% of 400 = 400
                                                50% of 400 = 200   --> 400+400+200=1,000

5) Combining Percents

A herd of 100 caribou was moved to a new location. The population increased by 10% the 1st year, then increased by 20% the next year.

Find the population of the second year:

10÷100= 0.10 -------> 1st Year ------> 0.10x100= 10 (increase)        100+10= 110
                                     2nd year -------> 0.20x110= 22 (increase)        110=22= 132

You can't use 30%, because you'll end up with a different wrong number.

Trisha's Percent Post

Hi this is my percent post!!

1.
  • 50% - To find 50% of a number, you divide the number by 2.
  • 10% - To find 10% of a number, you divide the number by 10.
  • 1% - To find 1% of a number you divide the number by 100.
  • 25% - To find 25% of a number you divide the number by 4.
  • A percent is a number out of 100 or a whole.

2.

  • 180%

  •  12 3/4%

  • 0.7%

3.
  • 26%
To convert a percentage to a decimal you have to divide the percentage by 100.
Percent to Decimal: 26% ÷ 100 = 0.26

To convert a percent to a fraction you will have to first convert it to a decimal number (0.26), then you cross out the zero(s) (26) to get the numerator. In order to get the denominator of the fraction, you look at the place value of the last digit in the decimal number (hundredths).
Percent to Fraction: 26/100

  •  7/10
To convert a fraction to a decimal, you have to divide the numerator by the denominator
Fraction to Decimal: 7 ÷ 10 = 0.7

To convert a fraction to a percent you will have to first convert the fraction into a decimal number. Then you multiply the decimal by 100 to get the percentage.
Fraction to Percent: 0.7 x 100 = 70%

  • 0.024
To convert a decimal number into a percent, you multiply the decimal by 100.
 Decimal Percent: 0.024 x 100 = 2.4%

To convert a decimal number to a fraction, you cross out the zero(s) (24) to get the numerator, to get the denominator you look at the place value of the last digit of the decimal number (thousandths).
Decimal to Fraction: 24/ 1000

 4.
  •  20%  of 60 = 12
     Mental Math:  10% of 60 = 6            ( 10% x 60 = 600
                             10% of 60 = 6              600 ÷ 100 = 6)
                                   6 + 6 =  12

     Calculator:      20% ÷ 100 = 0.2
                             0.2 x 60 = 12

  • 0.1% of 40 = 0.04
 Mental Math: 40 ÷ 10 = 4
                         4 ÷ 100 = 0.04

   Calculator:     0.1% ÷ 100 = 0.001
                          0.001 x 40 = 0.04

  • 250% of 400 = 1,000
 Mental Math:   100% of 400 = 400
                          100% of 400 = 400
                            50% of 400= 200
                            400+ 400 + 200 =  1000

Calculator:      250% ÷ 100 = 2.5
                         2.5 x 400 = 1,000

 5.
Question 7 on page 149: A herd of 100 caribou was moved to a new location. The population increased by 10% the first year and then increased by 20% the second year.

A) Find the population after the second year.
 10% ÷ 100 = 0.1
0.1 x 100 = 10
100 + 10 = 110

20% ÷ 100 = 0.2
0.2 x 110 = 22
110 + 22 = 132

B) Explain why there was not a 30% increase in population over the two years.

There was not a 30% increase in population over the two years because the population wouldn't be accurate, it would be less than the actual population over the two years with the 10% increase in the first year and the 20% increase in the second year.

30% ÷ 100 = 0.3
0.3 x 100 = 30
100 + 30 = 130
